How to backup your SMS from iPhone

Here are the instructions to backup SMS messages from your iPhone to your Windows PC or Apple Mac OS X for free.

Please note that the upload procedure could take a few minutes, depending on your bandwidth and on the size of your file.

  1. Sync your iPhone with iTunes on your computer (either Windows PC or Mac OS X).
    Please note that you need to select Back up to this computer and unselect Encrypt local backup in the Backup options in iTunes.
  2. On your computer, locate the file containing SMS messages 3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28 with extension .mdbackup or .mddata in the following paths:
    • Windows: %APPDATA%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\[some id]\
      Windows XP or lower: %APPDATA% = C:\Documents and Settings\[your username]\Application Data\
      Windows Vista/7/8: %APPDATA% = C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming
    • Mac OS X: User>Library>Application Support>Mobile Sync>Backup>[some id]
  3. Choose the file you just located:

    NOTE: MS Excel format and iOS6 devices don't support MMS export.
